Acid attacks are a form of violence that transcends geographical boundaries. Although it is equally unacceptable when acid violence occurs against men, attacks across the world affect women disproportionately. Violence frequently reflects and perpetuates discrimination of women and girls in society, as such it is prohibited by international law. However, all too often it’s a crime that goes unreported and unpunished. In many cases, survivors of attacks live in fear of reprisals.
The effect of acid on the skin is immediate and devastating. As a consequence survivors of acid and burn attacks suffer enormous physical and psychological trauma. The path to recovery is long and difficult. Survivors often require long term medical and psycho-social support. Read more about stories of recovery from the women in their own words below.
In our world full of smiles, color and joy, we rarely seem to realize how much pain, anguish and agony befalls all those poor unfortunates who become victims of such a brutal atrocity, at times robbing them off their essential right of life even!
