Beacon House Defense Law Society arranged a seminar on the issue of Gender Based Violence with specific emphasis on acid violence. The panel of judges/experts included human rights lawyer, medical doctor and NGO Director /Representatives. The program consisted of two halves. The first half was based on pure debate in which Lahore based school teams participated. The purpose was to inculcate logic based reasoning and critical thinking; create legal awareness of the Pakistani system while also refining public speaking ability in the students. The teams highlighted the failings of the Pakistani legal system, the possible solutions and rehabilitation of victims. In the second half the panel of judges/experts faced the students’ questions on the issue.
The law experts admitted the flaws in implementation of the legal system. The reconstructive surgery experts elaborated on the establishment of a state of the art burn unit in Jinnah Hospital. Ayesha Taslim highlighted DSF activities with special emphasis on vocational training for rehabilitation. She shared the psycho-social problems faced by the victims over and above the hazards of a burnt body. The underlying cultural barriers were also discussed.
The panel of experts appreciated the efforts of Beacon House students and management for organizing a thought provoking event on an important social issue.
