Niaz Bano

Niaz bano is an old lady living in Karachi. In her middle age, her husband died leaving her with a crown up daughter. She lived in poverty with her parents, few years later, she was forced by her relatives to marry again. After her marriage she came to know that her husband was not mentally stable but she still managed to live with her husband for the sake of her daughter and livelihood. A good proposal was offered and she planned her daughter’s marriage but her second husband intervened and suggested to her to reject the proposal. Niaz bano noted that the stepfather had bad intentions for his step daughter. Since the marriage proposal was reasonably good, Niaz Bano finally arranged her daughter’s marriage without her husband’s consent. Knowing this, her husband became furious and thought of teaching Niaz Bano a lesson. Quarrels were now a matter of routine. One evening Niaz Bano’s husband adopted a very sweet maner and apologized for his behavior. He offered to make tea for both of them. He went to the kitchen and came back with two cups; one filled with acid. He splashed the acid on her face.  Niaz Bano screamed with pain and was taken to a nearby clinic by her neighbours for emergency services. Her face, neck, shoulders were badly burnt.  Niaz also lost one eye.

Later, her daughter contacted DSF and got her mother registered in 2013. Since then she has gone through multiple surgeries. As her health became better, she was trained as a cleaner and is now working in a textile company as a floor cleaner to earn a livelihood.
