President’s Note

Acid burning is the worst form of violence against women

Every year hundreds of women are intentionally burnt by acid or kerosene oil; unfortunately many of them do not survive due to lack of medical assistance.

Acid and kerosene oil burning is a gender specific crime. Young girls and women between the ages of 14-25 are the common victims of this crime. Motives vary but are most frequently obsession, jealousy, suspected infidelity, refusal for marriage, female child births, demand for dowry, husband wanting to remarry, and non-cooperation among families.

More than 800 Acid and kerosene oil burnt victims from all over Pakistan are registered with the Foundation. They are treated without distinction of cast, creed, age or religion. DSF has a humane approach and therefore, these are not numbers but human beings to be served with all required support till they are rehabilitated and settled back in the main stream of social network.

DSF remains in touch with its family of patients and follows through till they are settled in the social main stream. We happily share that many girls after being fully treated have been married, have become mothers and are leading happy family lives. DSF arranged the ceremonies involving the media. In fact the ceremonies were held in the studios of the participating TV channels telecasting the events live. These events also serve as advocacy for the projection of the cause of women’s rights as well as build hope and confidence of the suffering families.

DSF also provides educational assistance to the burnt victims and their family members. The foundation has a policy dedicated to educating burn victims, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources and opportunities to rebuild their lives through learning. DSF offers financial assistance in the form of stipends to support the blind and physically challenged burnt victims. By supporting both the victims and their families, DSF fosters a comprehensive
approach to recovery and empowerment.
